My research addresses a broad spectrum of questions related to the conservation, evolution, and biogeography of island biotas. While I have a particular focus on plants and the Macaronesian islands, the range of organisms and geographical regions we study in my lab, the iEcoEvoLab, is extensive. Through experimental, ecological, and genetic approaches, a major aspect of our work aims to understand the mechanisms driving species evolution, speciation, extinction, and community assembly across space and time. I am particularly interested in how island systems can illustrate various stages of the evolutionary history of organisms and communities, providing insights into their interactions with geological and climatic events. Additionally, our research investigates the current consequences of global change, including how climate change and invasive species affect the distribution of island biodiversity. Our research is complemented by a commitment to engaging and involving important and interested groups within our society in our scientific endeavors.
