I am fascinated by the exuberant diversity of life and the intriguing and challenging research question why some places have more species than others. I am studying islands because they provide us with unique reserach opportunities to understand the origin and maintenance of diversity and how communities assemble. To this end, I am using a combination of field work and synthetic studies using ecoinformatics approaches and databases such as GIFT (gift.uni-goettingen.de). I am a full professor at University of Göttingen and head the Department of Biodiversity, Macroecology and Biogeography.
